A Brand New Plot
The Brief
To create a garden for a newly built, modern style village house with privacy and structure. The owners are keen gardeners who like to grow a wide range of fruit, vegetables and flowers. They wanted areas to enjoy the sun at different times of the day and space for their grandchildren to play.
The Solution
The priority for this garden was to plant a mature evergreen hedge to provide screening and to soften the edges of the plot. The majority of the garden is south facing and a summer house was built in the western corner to take advantage of the evening sun and also to hide the compost bins and water butts.
The garden is raised from the surrounding meadows (rather like an 18th century Haha) so we took advantage of the position and let the lawn open up onto the field beyond. A herbaceous border was shaped around the remainder of the lawn and a rose arch and espalier fruit trees added instant vertical interest. Raised beds were built to allow easy access to a range of herbs and vegetables.
