The Brief

To make a welcoming cottage garden to compliment the style of the house with lots of seasonal colour and interest.

The Solution

This garden was on a slope and a high retaining wall near the back of the house prevented the owners from making the most of their garden. Using terracing to push the wall back and building wide steps to the upper area of lawn connected the two spaces. Wider borders were then shaped and planted with a mix of cottage style small shrubs, perennials, and annuals.

An overgrown hedge was dividing the front of the cottage and limiting access, so the area was opened up, the gravel path was widened, and a Magnolia tree was planted in the centre of the new lawn with flowering shrubs by the house.
